Bakken Natural Gas Flaring: Northwestern North Dakota has one of the lowest population densities in the United States; however, this night lights image from NASA shows the area has hundreds of points of illumination. Many of these lights are Bakken Formation oil wells where natural gas that does not have a pipeline to market is being flared. Traditional oil fields extract oil from rocks with relatively high porosity and permeability, so the oil flows out fairly easily. In contrast, the Bakken Formation is a relatively tight formation with low porosity and low permeability rock, from which oil flows with difficulty. Wasting energy: This NASA satellite image shows how the gas being burned off at the Bakken oil field in North Dakota is almost as bright as the light emitted from major U.S. cities such as Minneapolis-St Paul and Chicago. The Bakken Formation /ˈbɑːkən/ is a rock unit from the Late Devonian to Early Mississippian age occupying about 200,000 square miles (520,000 km 2 ) of the subsurface of the Williston Basin, underlying parts of Montana, North Dakota, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. One hundred fifty oil companies, big ones, little ones, wildcatters, have flooded this region, drilling up to eight new wells every day on what is called the Bakken formation. Altogether, they are now producing 660,000 barrels a day — double the output two years ago — Bakken Natural Gas Flaring: Northwestern North Dakota has one of the lowest population densities in the United States; however, this night lights image from NASA shows the area has hundreds of points of illumination. Many of these lights are Bakken Formation oil wells where natural gas that does not have a pipeline to market is being flared. The Bakken Shale is a subsurface rock formation in the Williston Basin that encompasses large swathes of western North Dakota, spilling into Montana and Saskatchewa. Drillers hit oil in the Bakken in 1951 and it has been long known

9 Aug 2012 space as far as shippers go, and that's going to continue, just given the huge increases we're seeing in Bakken crude oil production," he said.

The Bakken oilfield was emitting about 250,000 tons of ethane per year. “We did not expect a single oil field to affect global levels of this gas,” said co-author Colm Sweeney, a scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA. That’s about 250,000 tons per year. “Two percent might not sound like a lot, but the emissions we observed in this single region are 10 to 100 times larger than reported in inventories. As the pressure drops, the cost to extract goes up, leading to a higher cost per barrel of oil. Over time, extraction makes less and less financial sense for companies doing the work, as energy costs to extract the oil spiral up. At night from space, the Bakken oil fields resemble a major city. The reason: the area is home to the Bakken shale formation, a site where gas and oil production are booming. On November 12, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of widespread drilling throughout the area.

oil in the Bakken has been known since the earliest days of oil production, it has not or gas as petroleum is forced into the space previously occupied by water. 27 Jan 2020 North Dakota s Bakken Shale gas output increased by 20% in 2019, and gas is being flared at oil wells within the state with natural gas capture rates Border, where Western Canadian import volumes compete for space. 29 Jul 2013 This is due to the fact that at current market rates, oil is approximately Therefore , as companies rush to extract oil from the Bakken shale field and cash but the flaring is so widespread that it is now visible from space, with
