Feds interest rate increase

The interest rate targeted by the Federal Reserve, the range of the federal funds rate, is currently 1.0% to 1.25%. That’s after the Fed cut it half of a percentage point on March 3, 2020. It was the first rate cut in 2020 and came in response to the threat posed to the economy by the coronavirus . Wednesday’s rate increase was the second this year and the seventh since the end of the Great Recession and brings the Fed’s benchmark rate to a range of 1.75 to 2 percent. Leading up to the July rate cut, the prime rate was 5.50 percent, 3 percentage points higher than the top end of the fed funds rate’s target range of between 2.25 percent and 2.5 percent.
